Very great articles, and informative! I am going back to my natural state, and since I have naturally curly hair (biracial dad and AA mom) my dad is elated by my choice and my mom is so happy. I found a great salon here in the greater atlanta area that specializes in treating, educating, styling and assisting in natural hair care I am really excited. The stylist I met with gave me some very hopeful advice regarding my hair since I stopped relaxing it over two years ago. I am really excited to have my hair cut into a good style and to learn how to keep it up at home.

As the general use of the wired straight hair, is AC-powered products, to buy the biggest problem is safety. To ensure the safety certification, certified products have undergone testing authority is in line with safety standards, export products in general is the result of the CE certification or UL. China has CCC certificate. In addition to purchase a registered trademark of the regular factory product.
Through the appearance can also be judged from another perspective, the quality of the product. Formal paid great attention to a variety of quality manufacturers, including appearance. A general look at each edge, if the injection mold is very smooth, no glitches, indicating the development of high quality mold, or injection molding followed by a repair. In addition to rotation about turn tail to see if it is very flexible, very flexible, indicating a good match. method is to let the natural sagging power line, 360-degree turn straight hair, if we can successfully rotate 360 degrees, indicating a good turn tail.http://www.instyleghd.com

How often do i need to clip my ends and how often do i need to condition it and what type of lite hair oil do i need to use? My coworkers are not to happy with me embracing my nautral hair some time i feel like it embarres them that i have natural hair but i love the carefreeness of it. I went throught chemocheraoy in 2008 ad all of my hair fell out. Up until that point, I was a perming weave queen. When it started to grow, it was like being born again. My hair started out soft and smooth like baby hair and I would just wear it as a short afro. I guess since I didn't appreciate the full beary of natural hair until I was forced to have it. Now, 2 years later I am a bonafide natural - I have tried a semi-perm color - but other than that no straightening chemicals at all and I love it!

i have friends and family that have went natural, and yes you can def straighten your hair with a flatiron, curling iron, blow dry, etc. but your not supposed to do that too often according to some. the main thing you want to remember is to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!
try reading this book on natural hair by cathy howse, excellent on black hair growth.

dutch84 it is worth the effort, because you learn new things about your hair everyday, like the other day I used a leave in reconstructor in my hair and I added just a pinch of evoo (extra virgin olive oil) and my hair just loved it, wow I was really amazed because I usually get a lot of shrinkage when I use any kind of conditioner or oils, but this time my curl pattern seemed stay longer, which was a plus.

Kisha, you did mention a good point, we want our hair to be light and not heavy, and that is what happens when we use pomades and grease in our hair it gets weighed down, so I would recommend that you use coconut oil, and treat your hair with a aphrogee deep conditioner every month, this will keep your hair manageable and soft but most of all light.

My Hair is coarse, and my curl pattern is tight, and tighter even more so in some areas than others. I have a tendency to sweat in my scalp as well.
What products would i use to leave my afro as light and manageable as possible?

hi rhonda the straw set is done on wet hair, so you will want to use a leave in conditioner or styling echo gel sparingly and allow the hair to dry under a hooded dryer, the rods you use come in various sizes so since your hair is shorter you will want to use a comb and wrap your ends into a circular motion to get it to curl up, henna is another way to loosen your hair texture naturally.
rhonda
with the straw set do you anything like a setting lotion, gel or wax to hold them in place. do you blowdry it straight or as is after washing &conditioning. my hair is thick corase& about 3" long when blowed dried straight
11 years ago
Hello rhonda the last three photos on this hub is of a hairstyle with cornrows bantu knots with a burgundy rinse, the second shows the hairstyle with small two strand twists and the last one is a straw set on natural hair, can be achieved easily with small rods or straws, section hair while wet and wrap around then let hair dry naturally or under a dryer.

Okayy . I am a freshmann in High School . Many of my friends and I are trying to go natural. Since everyone is just starting, you can't tell yet. Ive been getting relaxers since i was 4. The reason being, I was tender headed. So Im just realizing that Im probably still tender headed. I have thick hair that dries out easily. Im thinking of getting twists and straw sets while growing my relaxer out because being in high school, I definantly dont want the BC. So Ive read some suggestions but I think I need more info.
Any help ??? Im due for a relaxer in about 2 wks. I hope I get a response before then, because if I chicken out, Ill just end up sticking with a relaxer .

Great hub, Research Analyst--your writing just keeps getting better & better. Keep it up!

Glenda in your case I would suggest that you keep all your hair, your primary goal should be just to use methods to make it thicker. Make sure your braids are not pulling too tightly around your edges. Apply essential oils to the temples to promote hair growth.
I do not know how long you leave the braids in your hair it could be the cause of the thinning. Look for other protective hairstyles that will help you relieve the stress on the hair strands. Henna is also a good option to help condition and maintain hair while covering gray.
Try taking flaxseed oil tablets or vitamin E supplements these will help promote hair health too!

I am researching any information on going natural. I have very fine and thinning hair. My temples are almost non-existing with a lot of gray. Could you give me any suggestions on where to start. I have braids right now with about 1/2" new growth. Should I just cut it off to the new growth and start from there?
Kathleen that is the thing about having really short hair is that the styling options are usually limited until you get a little more length but you still can wear some cute styles with twists and puffs, also hair accessories really work, it is a good idea to style the front and then braid or twist the back, so the hair can stay stretched out, that way it will be easier to change into a variety of hairdos.

I like that the 1st 2 comments I read were from White people. I notice that more of them enjoy the uniqueness of our natural African based beauty than a lot of our own people. I received so much scrutiny from other African Americans for going natural and Caucasians I don't even know always pay me many compliments on my hair. I also get positive feedback from other people of other races as well. I think that this re-emergence of natural Black beauty intrigues other people but our own people as a whole need to see that we are beautiful just the way the Creator made us. I don't think straight is boring. I think it looks great on the people who naturally have straight hair. I was encouraged to do my big chop by a very pale Puerto Rican. When I did it, he absolutely loved it. I liked it too but so many thoughts ran through my mind and that's when I realized that all this time I placed too much weight on the opinions of others because that's what I feared the most. I was hesitant on going to work on Monday but got so many compliments like, "Wow, Meesa! Now this new look is totally you! You look beautiful!" It's a beautiful thing when we can just learn to appreciate the natural beauty in all of God's creation and not harm ourselves with harsh cancer causing products just to obtain a look that we weren't created to have. That's so superficial anyway. I only got 1 negative remark from an Italian girl who is an extremely self-absorbed individual. So, her opinion didn't count. It actually helped me to like my new look more...LOL

For Lillie, No matter what environment you live in you could find a great number of products that will work with your hair. Being natural is beautiful and healthy. I shaved all my hair off last year and I feel it is the most liberating and wonderful thing I ever did. Go to www.naturallycurly.com; look up your hair type which is probably 4b - 4c and they have great suggestions. Good luck.

I was natural about a year ago but due to the extreme dryness in my hair and unable to find hair products that worked, I decided to relaxe my hair again. I am ready to give it another try but I live in Kansas and the air here is really dry and also natural hair isn't so popular I got a lot of stares and snickering from both black and whites. My natural hair is aslo very tight and kinky, I would really need a product that could moisturize and stretch out my strands. Do you have any advice on good products?

I'm a junior in high school, I've decided to go natural. Ever since the summer 4th grade when I visited my family, my hair has broken off because no one took care of it. I was young I didn't know what to do. My mom's solution was perm, perm, and more perm, oh and greasing all the time.
But I'm ready for the transition, I've checked a lot of sources. I don't care if its short or long, all I want is healthy hair.

Some tips are to try hair banding, with this technique you can try it on wet hair or dry hair, section you hair in small parts then take rubber bands or ouchless hair ties and wrap the hair around the sections until your hair is stretched out into platts. It works best over night so you can take the banded natural hair out the next morning and then style it.

I have been natural for about 4 years now and I must say that it is one of the best decisions I have ever made about my hair. The styling possibilities are just endless and what makes me feel even better is that I am seeing a multitude of black women embracing their natural beauty. The styles are much more interesting than the permed look. I am 51 years old now and I really don't care whether my coworkers or others like my choice or not. It's about me. Lately I have been wearing the twist out and it is a fabulous style. I encourage all sisters to free themselves from those harsh chemicals that are really damaging our beautiful hair.

My relaxer is growing out and I plan on the BC soon. I'm 45 yrs old, 90% grey and am black/mexican -- I don't have curls I have waves. what products would you suggest on a short (3 in.) hair style?
Lisa the interesting thing about going natural is that you are now able to be more versatile in your hairstyles. Also your hair will be healthier, while you are growing out the natural hair you have many options to wear, braids, twists and even hair pieces.
The real fun comes when your natural hair starts to get some length and you can play with the texture with braid outs, wash n goes and twist outs, it only gets better. Stick with it, you will be glad you did.

Hi everyone. I am from England. Since the age of 10, i have had chemicals on my hair. I am now 41 years of age and have decided enough is enough. My hair is currently relaxed and is shoulder length (breaking on left side) I have decided to embrace my natural beauty that the good Lord has blessed me with, and to go natural. I dont even know what texture my hair is or used to be. My hair is very thick and grows very quickly, therefore I will do the big chop. As with other readers I have no idea on how to care for my natural hair. I am doing this for me and I am feeling very liberated by the others comments.
I welcome all comments good and bad about my natural journey

I been natural since 2008 and I have to admit it did take me awhile to get use to my natural hair. I grew up with my mom pressing and curling my hair I really was never trained in embracing my hair. I have gone from perms, braid extentions, hair pieces and wigs. I always felt like I was hiding me. I am much happier now. I did the b/c from my locs and I am touching, feeling and embracing my hair. I walk and work out 3 times a week and don't place so much concern on my hair. It is what it is. I attend a predominately white church and of course I got the looks and curiosity, same reaction I received from the black church. I am 60 yrs old and my healthty lifestyle is more important then God Bless. Embrace and Love.

I really enjoyed this post. I've recently decided to go natural, and this has given me some insight on the journey that I am going to take with my hair. Two summers ago, I cut my hair short, but I really didn't know how to take care of it, because I never really had to. It was my first year away at college, and the relaxers and hair products that I used on my hair damaged it badly. I got another haircut after that, but again my methods of taking care of it failed. I've always had thin hair, but I was relaxing it a lot and it caused extra thinning and bald spots. At that point, I decided it'd be best if I went natural. It's been three months now, and my hair already looks better and has grown. I'm excited, this journey shall be nice!

Hi, I have been thinking of going natural for awhile now. I have a short bob right now. I have a Relaxer as well, but I get very frustrated with my hair at times especially when it feel dry n brittle... I'm use to my hair being soft n very manageable. But since I had my second n last child, my hair just is not the same n my hair styles just don't last long. So I wonder if I do decide to go natural is it best to start over by cutting it all off? I have thick hair n its nice, not curly, or nuthing... But if I cut it off I'm very worried how I will look... Can u help me out, some advice would be GREAT... Thanks.

emmeaki,
I can relate to your story, one of the difficult things about going natural is that it takes preparation and as you mentioned if our schedules get busy and we do not have time to prep the night before it can be a real disaster in the morning.
So I have also used pony tails or just pulled out my handy wig hair pieces, as much as I love being natural it can be a challenge sometimes.

"Some days are just not good for a natural hairstyle, especially if you are in a hurry or have some place to be, the only time I really hate being natural is when I did not prepare my hair the night before with either braid outs, twist outs or plates."
Yeah! It's not just me! I have discovered that a ponytail is a good remedy, although I have to twist my hair in front (like cornrows, but twists instead of braids)and then make the ponytail because my hair is so thick that it won't lie flat otherwise. It takes less than ten minutes, so it's not too bad.

Many natural hair girls still straighten their hair with heat styling from flat irons or curling irons, they just don't do it too often.
So you will still have the versatility you change anytime you want.

The best women's hairstyles for thinning hair are those in which the length of the hair is either short or medium because long hair often puts weight on the roots of the hair making it weak causing more hair loss.
Thinning hair is a common problem effecting women today. The issue with thin hair is the texture which often is thin and wispy, and it can becomes limp and flat. So the ideal women's hairstyles for thinning hair are those that can add some volume.

katiewoman, thanks for the comment, I would suggest that you cut the hair short, because it sounds like the perm is causing breakage and damage.
Going natural is such a good option because you will not need to use vasaline on the hair just a really good moisturizing leave in conditioner and then put into a cornrow or braid style.
Swimming is a great sport and hobby so as long as her hair is under a swim cap there is not need to stop swimming.
Also consult a doctor or physician or nutritionist because if she is taking any types of medications or eating a particular diet it could be having an effect on her hairs health.

My daughter's permed hair is brittle and damaged. She has autism and is takes weekly swimming lessons. This is an activity/skill that she loves and something she can enjoy for life. I wet her hair, apply a conditioner (vaseline to seal) and swim cap before she swims. After swimming it washed immediately. Her hair is coming out just by touching it. Her last perm was 6 weeks ago. I refuse to give up swimming because of her hair. Should I have her hair cut short? Any suggestions for a style for a weekly swimmer? Thank you!

Going natural for kinky nappy black hair is not difficult to manage as many may have assumed it to be.
Caring for natural hair has become easier with the numerous variety of hair products available on the market that provide technology to restore shiny hair and restore smoothness.
Ethnic haircare is a journey that many have documented through photos, videos, forums and interest groups.
Information on how to go natural is available on the web with many websites such as Motown girl, nappturality, natural hair digest, treasured locks, curls, African wonders, komaza care, and many more.
On these various beauty black hairstyle websites you will read story after story of why women have chose to go natural in 2012, it is a journey and a look into the lives of black women and the relationship we have with our hair.
Well the cure to those bad hair days is fixed when you learn how to use hats, beanies, scarves and hair accessories, every natural curly girl needs to have at least one of each to save her on those mornings when your rushing out the door.
I had thinning hair when I just to perm my hair but since I've been natural I don't suffer from that problem anymore. I try to maintin a healthy hair wash regimen and avoid strong shampoos ph-4.5 not more.
I often ask myself how am I going to make this unruly hair stay in place and look halfway decent when I have no time to style it. So I starting making my own homemade hair treatment recipes.
Set free by becoming a natural curly girl
Going natural has allowed many African American women to become free, set free from the grueling, damaging effects of chemicals and heat on our hair. It is through the process of instant restorative methods that transform damaged hair.
Many have lived with the embarrassment of having to wear a hat or scarf on ones head when we did not have the money to go to the salon, or didn't have a family member to braid it, flat iron it or blow dry it for us and it left us with brittle dry hair that would not grow long.
Many of the challenges are all too familiar from getting the first relaxer as a teen to sitting and getting our hair hot pressed to waiting for hours to get individual braids put in our hair in the summer months.

The days I do not like being natural
Certain days and time of the year is just not good for a natural hairstyle, especially if you are in a hurry or have some place to be, the only time I really hate being natural is when I did not prepare my hair the night before with either braid outs, twist outs or plates, because this seems to be the only way to tame the huge growth of curls on my head.
If I forget to add conditioner and moisturizing oil after I wash my hair, it becomes so dry and unmanageable that I just can not stand it.
